Ellen Carey is an internationally known photographer born in Buffalo. Carey earned a MFA in photography from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a BA from the Kansas City Art Institute. Carey currently lives and works in Hartford, Connecticut at J&M Image Lab and New York City at Polaroid 20 X 24 Studio and Kelton Labs, all while maintaining a studio at the Underwood Typewriter Factory. She is also an Associate Professor in Photography, Hartford Art School at The University of Harford. Carey also lectures widely on photography and her art.
Although Carey’s photography has many different mediums, her experiments with the Polaroid 20 X 24 camera are her most well known.
Carey’s work has been the subject of forty-six, one-person exhibitions and has been included in hundreds of group exhibitions. She has been rewarded with many different grants and awards and also has two documentary videos (Pulls and Mourning Wall).
