Anthony J. Sisti (1901-1983), Circus, 1934; oil on canvas, Overall: 59 1/2 x 72 in. (151.1 x 182.9 cm) Frame: 66 1/4 x 78 1/4 in. (168.3 x 198.8 cm); Burchfield Penney Art Center, Gift of Tony Sisti, 1979
Tony Sisti’s large oil, Circus, is an example of a Works Projects Administration (WPA) commission that many Art Institute of Buffalo artists received. It was created as a mural design for what was then called the crippled children’s auditorium at City Hospital. The mural no longer exists. The charm of a colorful circus performance by healthy, lively horses would have brightened the spirits of young patients.
