Hosted Event  |  Communications Career Day for Students

College students interested in careers in public relations or advertising are invited to attend Communications Career Day on Saturday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Burchfield Penney Art Center.

The annual event is organized by the Buffalo Niagara chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and the Advertising Club of Buffalo, with assistance from the Buffalo State chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.

The event will open with a panel discussion with local ad and PR professionals entitled, “The Nitty Gritty: Cover Letters, Resumes, Portfolios and Internships.” Participants will include Charlie Fashana, First Niagara Bank; Steve Bell, Eric Mower and Associates; Kandis Fuller, Univera Healthcare; John DellaContrada, University at Buffalo; and Therese Hickok, Buffalo Niagara Partnership. Dr. Deborah Silverman, Buffalo State associate professor of communication, will serve as moderator.

The second panel discussion, “Acing Your Interview,” will feature Brynne Harrison, Canisius College; Tricia Barrett, Crowley Webb; and Liam O’Mahony, Rich Products Corporation; with Professor Catherine Foster of Canisius College as moderator.

One-on-one resume review sessions will be offered after each panel discussion.
The keynote speaker, Jessica Schimert of the Women’s Business Center at Canisius College and owner of Jessica J. Schimert Consulting, will discuss “Building Your Personal Brand.” Her presentation will be followed by a speed networking session with 10 local public relations and advertising professionals.

Representatives from PRSA, the Advertising Club and local colleges with graduate programs in communication will be on hand to answer questions about their organizations.
