Bill Donohue presents his book Himself, A Veteran’s Struggles with Rebel, Brits, and Devils on May 16, 1:30 pm at the Burchfield Penney Art Center.
The Civil War shaped the American future for the next century and a half. This worst American war set in motion changes in race relations, the role of women, social welfare, art, industry, urban development, music, theater, religion, economics, natural environment, education, gun proliferation, role of government … just about every facet of our lives. On this the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, Bill will discuss the broad American experience juxtaposing the story of his ancestors, Patrick and John Donohue, from Buffalo’s First Ward, who fought in some of Grant’s bloodiest battles right up to Appomattox and then coped with its effects for the rest of their lives.
