Squeaky Wheel's Silent/Sound Film Festival, co-hosted by the Burchfield Penney Art Center, is a free annual event that invites a local sound artist to create and perform a live soundtrack for a classic silent film. The event is held under the stars, on the outside terrace of the Burchfield Penney..
Kevin Cain will be using guitar, vibraphone, loop pedals, melodica, contact mics, and clarinet to create an atmospheric sound sculpture for Robert Wiene's eerie German Expressionist horror masterpieceThe Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
ABOUT THE FILM:
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is one of the most influential of German Expressionist films and is often considered one of the greatest horror movies of the silent era. The film used stylized sets, with abstract, jagged buildings painted on canvas backdrops and flats. To add to this strange style, the actors used an unrealistic technique that exhibited jerky and dancelike movements.
ABOUT THE SOUND ARTIST:
Kevin Cain is a sound sculptor working in Buffalo, NY. He uses repeating phrases of tone to create soundscapes that evolve and decay over time.
