Unusually Different is led by musician, recording artist, teacher and composer Rey Scott, long time member of the Sun Ra Arkestra. The Sextet consists of Ray Scott, Ken Foster, Steve Baczkowski, Dave DeWitt, Michael Colquhoun, Don Metz and Ellen Barnum. The group combines improvisation, chamber music, roots music and theatrics in their performance, performing on a variety of instruments, including flute oboe, baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, tuba and a variety of wind and percussion instruments.
The ensemble will perform Andrew Topolski’s Navigator. Navigator was composed as a result of the artists research into his proposal for the Buffalo International Airport and is a musical interpretation of the Niagara Frontier Region. The origin of the composition comes from a process of identifying notes that correspond to the letters in the names of various towns that comprise the Niagara Frontier. The Unusually Different ensemble’s improvisational prowess makes them the perfect match for Topolski’s work.
