Curator’s Tour: “How do you capture the ephemeral?”
A curator’s tour of the exhibition Charles E. Burchfield: Transitions by Nancy Weekly, Burchfield Scholar, Burchfield Penney Art Center & Burchfield Penney Instructor of Museum Studies, SUNY Buffalo State
Free with museum admission
Burchfield Scholar Nancy Weekly will lead of a tour of Charles E. Burchfield: Transitions to reveal the multi-faceted ways in which the artist challenged landscape painting traditions to depict both his visible and imaginary world. The exhibition’s paintings, drawings, and prints explore the artist’s challenge to capture ever-transitioning subjects, such as fleeting moments in time, the fading light of dusk, or the tumultuous clash of seasons. He also tackled how to make sound visible and gave inanimate objects, like houses and trees, human characteristics. He was an artist ahead of his time, rendering in a static, 2-dimensional form, the cinematic movement of life. Many works in the exhibition, including loans from private collections and New York galleries, have never been shown before.
