Burchfield Penney Collects Buffalo State

On View Tuesday, May 18–Tuesday, November 9, 2004

Burchfield Penney Collects Buffalo State was an extension of the landmark exhibition New York Collects Buffalo State that the Burchfield Penney Art Center presented from July 9 through October 3, 2004. Based on the vision of then Buffalo State College President Muriel A. Howard to feature artworks created by alumni, visitors in both sites were able to see art by some of the region’s most renowned artists such as A.P. Gorny, G. Peter Jemison, Robert Longo, Joseph Piccillo, and Bill Stewart. Co-curated by former Buffalo State Assistant Professor Diane Koeppel with graduate students from the Art Education Department, New York Collects Buffalo State brought together works from New York state museums and private collections.

While the exhibition at the Burchfield Penney focused exclusively on alumni artists, the exhibition at the M&T Center also included work by Buffalo State College faculty artists whose works are in the Burchfield Penney Art Center’s collection including Lin Xia Jiangand Peter Sowiski. Frank C. Eckmair and Jim Morris were represented by works that are part of the M&T Collection at the Burchfield Penney Art Center, from the series purchased with funds donated by M&T Bank in 1989.
