Charles Cary Rumsey died on this day in 1922

September 21, 1922 was the last day of Charles Cary Rumsey's life. According to newspaper accounts (found in the "Scrap Book Collections" at Central Library), his life was cut short when he accepted a ride at a train station from friends to take him home. A car ran into theirs on the Jericho Turnpike. The spot was located near Floral Park between Tulip and McKay Avenues.

Mary Harriman Rumsey was in Manhanttan that day attending a wedding with her Mother.

His funeral service was held at noon on September 23,1922 at Forest Lawn Crematory (on West Delavan Avenue near Delaware Avenue). His brother-in-law, Rev. Walter Lord conducted the service. There were 80 mourners there, including members of the Harriman family. William "Wild Bill" Donovan was there, too. He was married to CCR's cousin, Ruth.

I am going to visit CCR's grave to pay my respects.

When not time traveling, working out, or hanging out at the Burchfield Penney, Mary Beth Parrinello is the religion teacher in the Montessori program at Nardin Academy in Buffalo, N.Y. She also volunteers her time at Westminster Presbytarian Church, C.G. Jung Center, and Junior League of Buffalo, which was founded by Mary Harriman Rumsey, Charles Cary Rumsey's wife!
