                                                                      Sunday – Oct 13 –
     Another fine day – to church at 10:45 —
     Late P.M. – another visit to Chestnut Ridge, this time to the western part — several excursions into the woods — first a “nursery” of pines — the long corridors between deciduous trees – the ground spongy and springy with several inches of fallen needles – a clump of scarlet sumac only one to two feet tall —
     We found chicory, hawkweed and buttercups in bloom along the road —
     Two more excursions in the woods to the S.W. — where we saw many “breath-taking” sights — this autumn seems unusually beautiful — We gathered a few leaves for Peggy’s collection – which we delivered on the way home – Hank and Mart had just gotten back from the same territory where we were — they had eaten their lunch there —earlier Hank had taken Mart for a plane ride over the Boston Valley. They said to see autumnal colors from the air was impossible to describe —
