If you’re even remotely interested in visual art and its connection to the worlds of sound and music, put the Burchfield Penney Art Center (1300 Elmwood Ave.) on your weekend itinerary.
The latest in the center’s ambitious series of quarterly “launches,” “Listen at the Center: A four-day celebration of rhythm and sound,” is packed with events, performances and exhibitions that explore the busy intersections and interstices of art and sound.
Jonathan Golove’s “Mental Radio,” an electronic chamber opera about psychic power, kicks the weekend-long affair off at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Burchfield Penney Auditorium. From 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, as part of the center’s free monthly First Fridays event, four new exhibitions will open: “The Likeness of Being: Portraits by Philip Burke,” “Robert Blair: Selections from a Soldier’s Portfolio,” “Patteran: A Living Force and Moving Power” and “Emile Shult: Portrait of a Media Artist.”
The rest of the weekend, summarized in detail on the Burchfield Penney’s website, includes a reading from musicologist Edric Mesmer, a performance by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra of Charles Ives “Concord Sonata” paired with readings on Burchfield and Thoreau, a performance from LehrerDance and a series of short lectures on the art of Robert Booth, Charles Burchfield, Philip Burke, Robert Blair and the Burchfield Penney exhibition “Body Norms.”
