David Felder, SUNY Distinguished Professor and Birge-Cary Chair of Composition, is turning 60. His friends and colleagues are celebrating by inviting the public to a feast of Felder. Eight Felder compositions are on the menu. The earliest dates from 1986, and the latest was written just this year.
Among the Felder pieces to be performed are “Boxman,” written in 1986 and revised in 2013; “Another Face” (1987); and “TweenerB,” featuring percussionist Tom Kolor. “November Sky” (1992) features Emi Ferguson, a renowned flutist who performed at a Ground Zero ceremony with Yo-Yo Ma, Paul Simon and James Taylor.
Short Felder pieces include “Insomnia,” set to a poem by Dana Gioia, and “Buffalo Evening,” with words by Robert Creeley. The evening will close around 10 p.m. with “Shamayim.” The title is Hebrew for “heaven.”
The concert is a collaboration between UB’s Robert and Carol Morris Center For 21st Century Music, and a Musical Feast, the adventurous concert series led by longtime Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Concertmaster Charles Haupt.
