This Week at the Burchfield Penney


Shop the Museum Store this Valentine's Day for  one-of-a-kind gifts by local artists, as well as merchandise that celebrates Buffalo, Western New York and Charles E. Burchfield. The 15th juried biennial exhibition celebrates and explores the contemporary work of fine artists of the region working with glass, wood, fiber, clay and metal. The exhibition will be on view at Burchfield Penney from Friday, July 12, 2019 – Sunday, October 27, 2019.

The Burchfield Penney Art Center, and Sylvia L. Rosen are excited to have Marvin Bjurlin as the Art in Craft Media 2019 exhibition juror. Bjurlin’s work Planetary Array, 1987 was the first work acquired in the first craft art exhibition supported by the Sylvia L. Rosen endowment in 1987.

Basil Smikle Jr. is a Distinguished Lecturer of Politics and Public Policy at the City University of New York’s School of Labor and Urban Studies, and a Democratic Strategist whose commentary has been regularly featured on CNN, MSNBC, and in where he is a contributor. Basil was most recently the Executive Director of the New York Democratic Party during which time he was the “second highest ranking Democrat” in the State. He completed his PhD studies at Columbia University concentrating in Education and Politics, and is an adjunct lecturer at both Columbia’s School of International and Public Affairs and Teachers College.

As Executive Director of the Democratic Party, he worked closely with the Chair, Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown, and Governor Andrew Cuomo to manage electoral and fundraising strategies for the State, which included oversight of a multi-million-dollar operating budget. He recruited candidates for political office and worked closely with the Democratic National Committee to create grassroots programs for voters and act as Party surrogate on local and national media outlets.
