A Special Invitation for Members
Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967), Telegraph Music, 1949

Dear Burchfield Penney member,

Burchfield Penney Art Center Chair Peter Fleischmann and I invite you to join us in celebrating the arts of Buffalo in New York City May 8 and 9.

JoAnn Falletta will take the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra to Carnegie Hall on May 8 for a rarely performed experience with a Russian masterwork by Reinhold Gliere, his Symphony No. 3 in B Minor from 1911.

On May 9, Peter Fleischmann and I will take the first 40 people who contact us on a visit to the Whitney Museum of American Art, where works by Charles Burchfield and other artists from his period are on view, and next to DC Moore Gallery, which holds the Burchfield Foundation’s collection, and finally on a studio visit with Steve Miller, a highly regarded artist with roots in Buffalo. Steve is the son of Johanne Miller, a former Center Council member.

It will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the lobby of the Whitney, 945 Madison Ave. at 75th Street, where Director Adam Weinberg will greet us and lead us on our tour of American Legends along with its curator, the highly respected Americanist Barbara Haskell. Our next stop is DC Moore Gallery, 535 W. 22nd St. in Chelsea, to see their collection of Burchfield works. Multi-media artist Steve Miller will then receive us in his nearby studio, to show the exciting new work he is creating, recently shown in Switzerland, Brazil, London and in the National Academy of Science in Washington. The gallery visits and tours are all free of charge for Burchfield Penney members.

The BPO has organized several packages for their Carnegie day that have been promoted through the Travel Team, but tickets to the concert are just $28.50 through the BPO Box Office. The BPO has a $100 VIP package that includes a ticket, a CD and poster and a $275 level, for which patrons will be invited to a post-concert reception at the Russian Tea Room. For information on the travel packages you can visit www.bpo.org, call the BPO at 885-5000 or contact Linda Henning at the Travel Team at (716) 862-7667.

Contact Linda Madigan at the Burchfield Penney at 878-6012 or madigalm@buffalostate.edu to sign on for the May 9 Burchfield Penney segment. Remember, there is room for only 40, so call us soon to reserve a place. It will be a very special celebration of the excellence of Buffalo culture in the Big Apple!

With all best wishes,

Anthony Bannon, Ph.D.
Executive Director
