Kurt Treeby

Kurt Treeby is a western New York artist wh ohas been exploring the distinction between "high art" and "low art" by recreating masterworks as latch-hook rugs. Treeby writes, "I aim to further blur this distinction [between "high" and "low" art]. By re-interpreting masterworks as rugs, a playful dialogue is opened between the original creators and myself. My recreations of these paintings are not perfect. The colors are only approximations, the detail is simplified. The mystique of these image, created my master artists with recognizable styles, fuels our response to seeing them reproduced in such a way."

Treeby attended the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, and recieved his Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1996. He then completed his advanced studies at Syracuse University, and recieved his Masters in 2001. Currently, he teaches drawing at Erie Community College as well as studio art and art appreciation at SUNY Brockport.
