Part of M&T Second Friday

Friday, February 12, 2016, 5:30–7:30 pm

Reception Area

The celebration of the late Pappy Martin, the renowned local band leader and musician, continues at The Center. The Herbie Small Quartet will bring its seasoned, sultry sound performing  two sets of jazz standards.

Tenor saxophonist Herbie Small can be referred to as a renaissance man sharing his many talents in Buffalo. Small is a student of legendary tenor sax giant Elvin Shepherd—his best known saxophone student is Grover Washington. Shepherd passed on to Small how to captivate an audience by eliciting a mellow sound from the tenor sax.  He has developed his own distinctive, soulful warm sound since in the tradition of legendary tenor saxophonists who have taken the jazz stage the past few decades. He has played with many who have come through the Historic Colored Musicians Club and throughout the region, including playing with the revered Al Tinney.

Pappy Martin's countless stories and the lives he touched through music live on through the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Society, an organization which honors his musical tradition by enhancing the awareness, appreciation and the celebration of jazz as a viable art form.
