Hero Design is a multidisciplinary design studio dedicated to producing hand-crafted illustration and design, run by Buffalo-based husband and wife team, Beth Manos and Mark Brickey. Formed in 2003, Hero focuses primarily on design and illustration for the music industry and cultural institutions, yet have enjoyed collaborating on a wide range of projects for a variety of clients. Hero’s innovative screen prints have been featured in magazines such as HOW, Print, and SPIN, and design publications including Gigposters Volume 1: Rock Show Art of the 21st Century (Quirk Books), 1000 Garment Graphics (Rockport Publishers), and Naive: Modernism and Folklore in Contemporary Graphic Design (Gestalten Verlag). Their work has been exhibited in various museums and galleries including Museum of Design Atlanta, Gallery 1988 (LA), and Crewest Gallery (LA).
Brian Grunert is a graphic designer and the owner of a Buffalo-based studio White Bicycle. The studio focuses on cultural marketing and regularly collaborates with record labels and independent artists, creating album packaging and related materials. Their work has gained national recognition in various publications including Communication Arts and Print Magazine. They won a Grammy Award for album package design in 2004 and were nominated again in 2005, 2006, and 2007 for work done with Ani DiFranco and Righteous Babe Records.
Ben Van Dyke received his MFA from the University of Michigan in 2006 and between 1997 and 2003, he worked as an Art Director in Western Michigan. Since running like hell from the advertising industry in 2003, he has been involved in more than 40 typography and design exhibitions in North America, Europe, and Asia. In 2006, Van Dyke was awarded a Fulbright fellowship to The Netherlands. During this time, he was an Artist-in-Residence at NLXL in The Hague and worked on design projects for clients such as the European Space Agency, DOK Architecten, Weiden + Kennedy Amsterdam, PTT, Holland NS, The Koorenhuis, KPN, and The Roderick Danstheater. Following his work in The Netherlands, Van Dyke was invited to join the Visual Studies faculty at The State University of New York at Buffalo, where he is Head of the Graphic Design program. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors of the experiential design education program DesignInquiry.
The Advertising Club of Buffalo is an organization designed to promote and foster interaction among the graphic arts and marketing communication professionals in the Western New York area. They provide current information about developments within the advertising/graphic design, visual arts, Interactive development, print production, broadcasting and publication industries to encourage excellence by those engaged in said fields while encouraging interest among students.
