The Burchfield Penney Art Center, AIDS Community Services of WNY and the Buffalo State Butler Library Special Collections Department will host a World AIDS observance at the Burchfield Penney from 10 am to 8 pm with a press conference to be held at 11 am on Thursday, December 1. The observance will feature more than 50 handmade memorial quilts crafted as tributes to beloved Western New Yorkers lost to AIDS. The memorial quilts, known as the Mending of the Hearts Memorial Project, are being displayed throughout the main foyer of the Burchfield Penney. An exhibit of the Madeline Davis’ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and transgender (LGBT) History Archives will accompany the quilt panel exhibition to demonstrate the effect of 30 years of AIDS on the WNY LGBT community and its accompanying devastation to the arts community both locally and nationally.
