Eventually, at 4:30 I had a dream. I was out in a woods; interwoven with the trees were rooms of an old barn. Pal was with me. Suddenly he became alert, then very excited. Into the woods and barn a whole company of people were coming. They were all clad in a monotonous gray, and all, men and women, had grim faces. I thought, “They are German Fifth Columns, harbingers of World War III.” With Pal, I went outside intending to escape & give the alarm. A beautiful scene confronted me. Above the woods a great ragged sky seethed, shot with moonlight. I woke then, and there was the dog at my face.
